Every Letter

As I write these liner notes, my family and I are in the process of packing things up preparing to put our house on the market. This exercise makes me keenly aware of how much stuff we fill our lives with. The memorabilia is great - I'm glad to have a record of the major events that have comprised my life and the lives of the people I love most dearly. But it all tends to get stuffed away, its sole purpose being to stimulate that proverbial "walk down memory lane" once every few years. Maybe those walks will become more frequent as I get older and have more time. But maybe not. And what happens to all that stuff when I'm gone? Will anyone rummage through my boxes? Will they do it more than once? And what happens when those people are gone too? Will anybody care? Is anybody reading this right now? Is anybody listening?

Lyrics

This house, your history
Everything you ever did
And thought and got and nurtured
It's all here

In the closet
and the basement
The overflowing shoeboxes and dresser drawers
It's all here

You saved every letter
Every photograph
Every birthday card and valentine
It's all here

Every program
from our concerts
And our plays
It's all here but who will ever have the time
To read them?

You took notes at church
Flowing cursive notes
in tiny spiral notebooks
They're all here

Notes on the scriptures
Offering hope
In the afterlife

You saved every letter
Every photograph
Every birthday card and valentine
It's all here

Every program from our concerts
And our plays
It's all here but who will ever have the time
To read them?

You saved ever letter
But who will ever have the time
To read them?
